The Cost of Getting Older

Updated: Mar 3

What mother never told us about the financial costs of aging.

After retiring I noticed lots of money that used to show up in my checking account wasn't there anymore! The promise from the non-profit I had run for over 30 years said they couldn't keep the commitment to support my retirement financially, and since I had no other recourse, I went back to work!

As a self supporting ager, I am grateful to have the profession that enables me to work from home virtually seeing clients every morning and resting or doing something different in the afternoons. The fear of inadequate financial security is a driving force and worry on the minds of many of my peers. It is a real fright to think you may not be able to afford the cell phone bill or electric bill, or be able to support yourself. What do people do when they are in that frightened stage? Most of us don't want to share the secret shame of not having saved enough for our old age. Others are quite comfortable, but wish they hadn't moved so early into a retirement community. Others talk about the strain of a very sick loved one and the cost of care giving. Most I talk to are very resourceful, cutting costs everywhere they can, and making due with way less than they used to, with good humor and a positive attitude. Our friend Wilbur used to say, "Every day above the ground is a good one. Hope yours is today. We welcome ideas in your chats to us, especially in this area. Together we can make great changes.
